Policies & Procedures

Access to Facility

campus1

Users fees:

A. The facility will not charge user fees to faculty, students or associates of Appalachian. The goal is to encourage and facilitate use of the facility.  Major users of the facility are encouraged to support the facility as outlined in Item C below.

B. Corporate users will be charged a user fee at the rate of $30.00 per hour.

C. When primary users of the facility seek external funding to support projects in which the Microscopy Facility
is used, they are expected to request support at the level of $15 per hour.  Successful grants will transfer
the amount requested for Microscopy Facility support in a one-time block to the facilities account.  Access
to the facility will not be based on success of external funding or level of support.

D. The lab Director will coordinate with the Sponsored Programs Office to ensure that all new proposals that
call for use of the Facility to include a request for this support.

Access to Facility:

All faculty, students and staff will be encouraged to use the facility for research, teaching and service.  Access to the facility may be restricted or denied based only on:

1)  limits of scheduling,
2)  level of training and competence of the user, and
3)  in the case of large, beam-time intensive projects, scientific merit worthy of and planned for publication
in the peer reviewed literature should be demonstrated.

User's Annual Report:

All users of the facility will provide a report to the Director annually (or at the end of the project if duration is less than one year).  The report can be taken directly from individual faculty or staff annual reviews. Faculty or staff are expected to file reports for student projects that that they have supervised.

    The report should include:

1. Very brief description of projects using the Microscopy Facility.
2. Bibliography of any publications or presentations that use data generated in the Microscopy Facility.
3. Hard copies (reprints or copies) of any publications published using data generated in the Microscopy Facility.

Reports will be compiled by the Director in the Facilities annual report to the Dean of CAS.
